I thought of a song which made me think when I found out more about what it meant.
I've always liked the song "Desperado" and I always interpreted the line "you been out riding fences", to mean that the subject of the song was wasting time and acting stupid and going nowhere, or something like that.
Then one of my riding instructors, who was into cowboy lore, told me that "riding fences" referred to the daily routine of checking that all the fences were still standing, to ensure that nothing could get in or out. To me that seemed to be a good analogy for the type of personality described by the song.
Or maybe I just over-analyze songs. I don't know.
