During the week when my internet was down, I connected to unsecured networks, one of which was called "linksys". Now my internet is back up, but at least once a day it will suddenly go out (usually after my computer has gone into hibernation). I'll click on Refresh Network List and I'll see that my computer is for some reason trying to connect to the linksys network, even though my own network has much higher connecitivity. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Are you using wimdows wireless netowrk set up or another. The way to find out is to right click the little computer icon in yout taskbar and choose view all available connections. Let me know what comes up.
My own connection, default, Netgear, and linksys_SES_8554.
It doesn't even show the one my computer randomly disconnects and tries to connect to. That one is just called linksys. It for some reason seems to have developed an affinity for that network.

Is netgear your router? And what is the linksys connection you have on there? No, my connection is called by my first name. My router is a linksys, but I don't think it's the one it tries to connect to randomly because I can get the "linksys" network at least 5 miles from my home. I don't even know what those other networks are.
For some reason it keeps wanting to connect to that darn "linksys" network.

You need to go in and remove all the connections that you do not need. If your "name" is the only one on there it will not connect. It is hard for me to help, I am more of a "hands on get in there and do it my self" type person.

Someone has to say it, why not me. Thats what you get for free internet.
Well, if people thought I was doing wrong I wish they'd said something at the time, instead of waiting for something to go wrong and then implying it was some kind of karma AND that everyone else is thinking the same thing.
I was doing it in the middle of the night and I believe I was harming no one. As I said in my thread, if someone in the same situation did it to me, I would say no problem.

I can't figure out how to remove those other connections so I guess I'll wait and see what happens.

I am sorry Entre, but I tried. If you know how to post a screen shot you could post it here. Like take one of your linksys set up. I know there is a way to remove them. Guimme a sec i will read up.

Oh, don't worry about it, plush. I know you tried. I don't know how to post a screen shot, plus it happens only intermittently, so I'll just see what Sparky says later.

That's cool. He knows a little more than me. Stressing the "little". He will fix you up maybe. Just try to write down all the info you can and have it ready. I helps to know as much as possible.
Go to Control Panel Go to Network Connections Right Click Wireless Network Connections Go to Properties Go to Wireless Networks Tab Click on the network to highlight Click on Properties Go to Connection Tab Remove the tick from the box
That should make it connect to your own internet connection by default then, it seems if you remove the other connections they come back again when you next look, I am not sure why that happens but will look into it if you still have problems after doing the above.
Okay, I did that. There were at least ten networks listed so I switched them all to On Demand instead of Automatic. I'll let you know how that works. Thanks everyone for your help.

It did it again, but this time it tried to connect to default. I went back and saw that I had failed to put some networks on On Demand. I fixed it. Hopefully it won't happen again.
