The Bulverde man was sentenced to 75 years in prison for shooting at the officer. Fifty-year-old Michael Kennedy fired more than 30 shots at Schertz police Officer Richard Kunz when he was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 35 last March.
Kennedy was shot three times in the shootout, while Kunz was uninjured.
Kennedy pleaded guilty in January to aggravated assault of a public servant with a deadly weapon. His sentencing yesterday also included a ten-thousand-dollar fine.
Prosecutors say Kennedy may have been driving to settle a score with police when he was pulled over. Police had confiscated a gun from Kennedy for a criminal mischief incident. When pulled over, Kennedy had two handguns and an assault rifle in his car.
Kennedy’s defense lawyer says he was attempting “suicide by cop” when he started the shootout. His lawyer says Kennedy has a history of being abused by his father, mental illness and alcohol abuse.
***my thought is that he should have been given death. We also need to work on the ATTEMPTED crap. Goals that are set should be met. i say take him out back like ol' yeller.
