I need to set up the wireless internet for my laptop. So my question is where do I begin? I am not going to pay Time Warner 85 bucks to set it up. Unless of course in the long run the price pans out the same.

Go to the local walmat and get a Linksys cable/dsl router, and a wireless usb adapter.
Just follow the directions and hit us back up for details if you get stuck.
Basically, you plug the router in the line after the cable modem. And the wireless adapter into the pc. (some laptops HAVE a wireless transeaver internally...check yours to see) They see each other and work.
(thats the simple version...your miliage may vary)

My Grandma just got wireless network and I help her set it up. She got Net gear, and its a very easy process. If you need help call tech support and they will TRY to speak English. But overall they have pictures and easy instructions.
Make sure you get a router that has the same channel or frequency, best way to do this is call the company you got your computer from and give them the information they need. There send a router that would work.

Netgear is a better wireless router as it provides better coverage with the wireless signal and the built in firewall is more robust then any other routher. it's just as easy to setup as a Linksys router.
also, look to see if your laptop has a built in wireless card, maybe you wont need to get a external card or USB adapter as Zap mentioned.
and when you do get your wireless up and running absolutly make sure that the connection is set to "Secure" and not "Open". if it's set to open then anybody withen range can leech of your signal and possibly get you in trouble if they search kid porn or download any illegal stuff as it will be your IP address that will be recorded, not theirs
one more thing...dont ever buy electric equipment from Walmart. instead go to Bestbuy or even Circuit City as they will provide the option of a service and warrenty plan and also provide more of a knowledgable customer service support.

True...but most people would rather buy the exact same thing for less money and not pay for extended warrantees and other crap...when you can just follow the pictures on the instruction sheet.
If it goes bad...buy another one with the money you saved on the service and extended warrantee package

i hate to hijack this topic but you will find these products to be cheaper at Bestbuy or any other electroninc store and not to mention the customer service that you will get when asking any particular questions. at walmart chances are a stockboy who claims to know about routers or anything else might get paged over the intercome to help answer questions..now that customer service at it's best.
Additionally...I have found that the guys in best buy will tell you ANYthing to make a sale. I've done some 'undercover' buying there just to prove the point.

I have a 2wire. The linksys product was crap for me. I had to return it. And now I am stuck with a 70$ wireless card. I purchased my gear through my DSL provider. They knew what I needed and didn't fuck around. I had the whole thing running in like 10 minutes. Without Sparkle's help.
PC air card.... Plugs into the same slot as the linksys card
instead of working off a local net work, it works off of cell phone towers. I can connect sitting miles from the nearest population... ie when I'm out in the middle of the desert my SO can stay on it for miles while I'm driving and chat on TOP.
Speed depends on your locality and card...(Big cities and tower strength) Sprint has the best coverage. Very few places it wont work, mostly when I'm on the way to Washington state but works great when I get there.

You know what...you do what works for you. If it works and you are happy. Good. I just offered the same advice that I have found normally will work for my customers without a lot of cost or hassle.
Just because you or anyone else has a different preference or has experience with a different piece of hardware or setup...does not mean that the one I recommend does not work.

yeeeeeeeah well see, here's the deal. The james Bond comment was suppose to be a funny. Hence the highlighted quote. The next comment had nothing to do with you, it was for Phoho. So reread it, recheck it, and then bite me.
Well the 'undercover' buying was actually just what it said. I managed a computer store at the time and took one of the techs with me and we went around to the competition posing as a couple ....she pretended to only use computers at work....I pretended to be an ignorant ass who didn't know shit but wanted to be in charge. (she had to walk away several times during discusions with the sales guys because she couldn't keep a straight face) Yeah....This Xwhatever is the best one out there....yada yada.... By the end of the convo.... well the Ywhatever is actually better than the Xwhatever but it costs less money too.... and on and on.
sorry...can't recomend ANYone trust the pimple crew at one of those electronic stores...not only do they lie their asses off...but they charge MORE for most stuff and then try to sell extras 99.99% of people simply do NOT need.

We are fortunate to have such geeky friends for this.
I pretended to be an ignorant ass who didn't know shit but wanted to be in charge.
wow..you know, i think i'll keep my opinions to myslf as well.
ah fuck it...maybe you were being such a dumb ass going "undercover" just so you can prove whatever point you were trying to prove they saw right through you. and so everybody else threw in their opinions including me, and you get all pissy becouse none of them agreed with you.
and just to let everybody know..i will still continue to give help to ANYone who maybe having issues with their computers and i'm sure Sparky will too, hell, i'm sure that anyone will try too help

Omg, it also doesn't mean that they're being critical of your suggestion. Somehow I don't think you have to worry about ANYone asking for your advice, you can probably erase your note.

Without a doubt MP, I get so much satisfaction when I have managed to help someone that I will always help whenever I can.
