Guys, I am trying to make my mind up whether or not if I wanna enlist in the Navy or not. I talked to the recruiter today, which went pretty good but they have a way to tell you what you always wanna hear. I am thinking about Master of Arms (police officer on base.) Please list some of the advantages/disadvantages. Thanks in advance.
A little side note, I have no girlfriend, no kids nothing making me stop doing this. Just basically my family and friends.
Also I am meeting with them on Monday again what is some specific questions I can ask them.
PLEASE DON'T HIJACKED THIS THREAD.

you need to find out if they ave any open slots for MA's. a lot of the time with the Navy you sign up for a particular job in mind but find out after you do the basic training that there are no open slots. so they stick you in a holding squad doing mediocre bitchboy jobs around the base waiting for the slot to open. if you want to do Military Police then truly consider the Army or the Marines. the Military Police thats next to us(Fort Lewis) are very respected by the local police agencies. The Navy base up from us only have a few MA's on their base and they are not respected and dont seem to have all the proper training as the MP's get at Ft. Lewis. also i would imagine that you would get more experience with the Army or Marines working at a larger base then what the Navy would offer. for instance, Ft. Lewis has a huge drug problem as i'm always going there to assist them with searches and so far this year they already had some serious crimes commited
Sorry, I know everyone is in the "go go troops" mood anymore, and I'm not a hippy, but you know I would have a really hard time going to shoot someone because of a hidden agenda I wouldn't even ever really know about. I guess that's why they sent the young. They don't care.
You are absolutely correct. When I was drafted, in the early 70's nobody cared about the "war" and we had a REAL tough time when we came back. Now everybody seems "gung-ho" for this usless waste of young people's lives and money.

Exactly! And though because of all the other horseshit evolved in or "enemy lines" these days, they have made the benefits very nice if you live, or can live with what you did for reasons you know not. :)

Yes the "rules" have changed, having the job I did made the so-called benefits unavailable to a select few. Now everybody is elegible to get shot in the "line-of-duty". But we never had the good benefits of being in the military.
Course not. This is the new America!!!!! You don't do things out of principle anymore, it's all about "what do I get?"!! And now, todays youth feels entitled to get something before they even want it. Opppp's am I jumping topic???? I'm just fucking ,,,,,, out of control!!!! ROFLMOA.

Anyone else see the common theme here. He works at the YMCA, and now he wants to be a sailor. Ooops no hijacking. Sorry.
Toby -
The Navy sucks for Law Enforcement. They are the Navy Command is the most restrictive when it come to letting their people do police work. The Navy has led the way to converting to a civilian police operations, (meaning sailors aren't doing the police work) yet they still have their hands tied as to what they are allowed to do. The bright side of the Navy is that few sailors have been killed in our current war(s).
IF you join the Marines or Army as an MP, you are most certainly going to go to war. I admire anyone who wants to serve their Country. My Army unit (MP) went to Desert Sheild/Storm, it was not pretty, it was not fun. Don't go in thinking that you are going to be sitting all clean and smelling good in some police car somewhere stateside waiting to get involved in the next big capper on post. All branches of the military have been mandated by the Pentagon to convert LE operations to civilian forces to allow the service memebers to concentrate on combat related duties and training. The MP corps for both the Army and the Marines have long histories of being understaffed, and with the recruiting problems going on now, it is even worse.
The Airforce has two very distinct different MOS's (job) for SP, ones mission is LE, the others in Flightline security and combat related. Again, the AF has been mandated to convert LE operations, so I would guess that many of them are being forced to change jobs. I don't know this for a fact, I have not spoken to an AF SP in along time.
If I were making this decision, I would go in the Coast Guard. TONS of valuable experience, they do LE daily (providing you are not dumb enough to pick "cook" as your job).
Tough and honorable decision. PM me if you have any questions you don't want to ask here.
P.S. If you go int he navy, I have a good source for soap on a rope

LOL, I think that means it SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You also need to think about whether or not this is something that you really and truly want to do, or if it just sounds good because you didn't get the job that you had your heart set on. If you're thinking "I might as well do this because I don't know what else to do," you may regret your decision. The others who have posted have offered what seems to be very good advice, you may want to take advantage of their knowledge and experience by discussing it further with them and using that information to help you come to a decision.

I couldn't agree more, it isn't a decision that you take lightly these days
Toby give me a IM and I will holler at you next time online. I was in the navy, stationed in sunny San Diego.. I can provide you with some tips and what not.

That might have been the best route for you in the big picture from everything you write. Is it too late for you to still join? If you're not to old to start into police accademy maybe you're not too old to join the marines? I really have no idea what the age cut-off date is? and is one branch of armed services different inthis particular regard than the others?
They don't really like older people. I know someone that tried. They seem to like em young and dumb. Zap's is only half the man for the job. LOL
zap, that one was in good fun. I hope you take it that way, though I wouldn't blame you if you didn't.
To those of you who have served in the armed services... or like Toby: are currently researching it... is there a web address or something that compares the pro's and cons of each branch so that you can compare them with an apple to apples comparison? benefits to benefits... negatives to negatives? I'd like to keep that as a reference if one exists? I've been told that recruiters will tell you what you want to hear and leave selective parts out that might change your mind? (again... that is not first hand..so I can't vouch for the validity...which is why I am asking is there a comparison somewhere in writing??)

IF IT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, GET IT IN WRITTING. IF THEY CAN'T PUT IT IN WRITTING, IT WONT HAPPEN!
so then, for Toby to be able to make the apples to apples comparison between the different armed services, he would have to contact each one that he might be interested in , and get the best quote from each one in writing..and then compare the written quotes?
Next question... can he make a list of what he wants and get it all? sort of like negotiations?
I had to do the research myself when I was looking into the military. I ruled out the Airforce on my own (I just wasn't interested in flying. I know they offer more than that, but they are the airforce..). I also knew I wasn't cut out for the Navy (hate water), so I looked at the Army and the Marines. I talked to both recruiters. I got the typical sales pitch from both of them. I took what they said and did more research, talked to people I knew from each branch and went back to talk to them both again. When I returned to the Marines, the recruiter I had talked to the first time stood up to talk to me, but the Staff Sergant (God rest his soul, he has passed away) approached me first and took me back in his office and shut the door. He didn't give me the sales pitch, he gave me the real deal. He said he saw something in me and felt I deserved the truth and my questions answered honestly so I could make my decision based on all the facts. He was very cool! After talking with him, I made my choice for the Marines. He worked with me so I could pass the physical requirements (water related). What I'm getting at Toby, if you can find a good recruiter who will answer all your questions/concerns and not just read the enlistment poster it will greatly aid in the decision making.

Basically I am doing this for training purposes and to get more education into this field. One thing I like about the Navy is if I wanna study computers for an example, I could do that but work as a MA (master of arms.) So I could have a back up plan.
Photo, sorry to hear about your dial up connection, don't you know dial up died a few years ago. I will talk to you in due time though. Thanks.
