I just started renting old Dragnet episodes on DVD. I would have to say one of the biggest influences on me getting into law enforcement is watching shows like Adam 12 and Dragnet (my dad watched them when he was growing up, and so he liked watching them on repeat- I'm not that old). Anyone else watch the Jack Webb shows? The other ones were SWAT and Emergency!. I never really cared for the latter. Dragnet was my favorite, and Adam 12 came in 2nd.

I never got into Dragnet but definately Adam 12 and SWAT hooked me as a kid. Emergency! wasn't bad, but that, and Star Trek was like my mother's "crack" when I was growing up.
I also loved the old re-runs of "The Rat Patrol." The only problem was that it was on at 11:30 friday night, and my brother and I would have to fight my parents to stay up and watch it.
I heard some very interesting stories about the taping of the Dragnet series. They sometimes filmed more than one episode a day, sometimes Jack Webb and Harry Morgan had been drinking, and many times they ad-libbed, not always following the script.
I understand Jack was a workaholic, was married to 'Dixie' on Emergency, she divorced him and was married to the older doctor, real name 'Bobby Troup', and Jack Webb even lined up parts for him after the marriage.
Dragnet was good back then. Haven't watched it lately. I loved The Rookies, SWAT, Adam12 and Emergency. Wonder if The Rookies will ever come out on dvd? It's probably pretty cheesy, now that I am in LE. Oh well, we were kids.
I have always loved the old cop shows. I liked Adam 12 better than Dragnet, although I never missed an episode of either. They used to run them back to back on TV Land but I haven't seen them in a while. I guess some day I will buy the sets.
I met Kent McCord (Jim Reed) at an Auto Theft Conference in LA about 3 years ago. It was really cool talking to him about the show.
I also use old re-runs in my training of newer officers. You laugh but some of the stuff that Malloy taught his Reed still applies today.

Both Dragnet and Adam-12 are my favorate. When the first season was released recently I bought it and watched the whole thing in one weekend. Both those shows had a great amount of influence on where I am now LE wise.
