I guess poetry can be a hobby?

OK, I may take some flack for this but.....One of my hobbies is writing. I can say more when I write than I can ever speak. I have been doing poetry for about 25 years, that counts as a hobby since I've done it so long right??? LOL

Anyway, anyone else write? Wanna share? I'll start (*nervously posting*)

Do Not Despair

Life is a road with many winding turns,

leading us in directions our heart yearns.

My heart was empty, my spirit broken,

I was looking for a sign, a symbol, a token?

I was tired and fell to the ground,

when an Angel lifted me and turned me around.

This Angel showed me my life to that point in time,

I was ashamed to say that life was mine.

But this Angel tilted my weary head,

“God has been watching you,” this Angel said.

He has seen your struggles time after time,

He has sent you messages in poetic rhyme.

He has tried to guide you and shed light on your way,

He sent me to help you on this given day.

You asked for a sign from up above,

can you not feel the power of His love?

He has given you a gift of words set in rhyme,

they are not bound by earthly time.

Read them again and you will find what you seek.

You were never alone; you were just tired and weak.

You made some mistakes, but you learned and grew.

You were never alone, He was right there with you.

The emptiness you feel is yours alone,

read what you have written; see what you’ve been shown.

I cried at my blindness over the years,

for all of those words that had fallen on deaf ears.

The Angel wiped the tears from my eyes and sent me on my way.

“Yours is to share what you learned on this day.”

So I give to you this poetic verse about despair,

You’re never alone, He’s always there.

Well, I guess I will be the one to say it. That poem was very good. Now, I have to find a beer to wash down this bowling ball. LOL

I love the poem Kat!

I just started trying my hand at poetry.  I entered a contest on a dare and I'm actually getting my first poem published in a book!  I wrote it to comfort a friend of mine who was worried about a long trip she had to go on!

It's a really simple poem, but I think it says a lot!  Let me know what you think!

A Travelers Prayer

Lord I pray that you will watch over my path today.

As I travel, please allow an Angel of Wisdom,
To ride upon my shoulder!

Please allow your Angels of Protection,
To ride each bumper of my car!

And send your Angels of Joy and Love,
To ride inside my Heart!

And last of all please send an Angel of Peace,
To reside in my Mind!

These Angels that I ask for shall be my armor,
And my comfort. They will wrap me with your love,
And make my journey a safe one.

Kitty, that's very powerful......I am sure your friend was very impressed with your thoughtfulness and caring.

I have been writing a long time. At first it was just for me to vent, but a teacher I had in Jr. High turned it into a grade and really let me run with it. I have been writing every since! I have many that have been published over the years and I still keep some just to myself.... Keep writing, you have a gift!

Thanks!  I am still nervous about letting other people read what I write!  I appreciate your opinion!

I have always had a good imagination, and I like to tell stories!  I have had an idea for a story, maybe a novel, geared towards teenage readers.  A little scifi, fantasy.  Just in the brainstorming stages but I am trying all kinds of writing more, to get used to the creative process!

Kitty, this is for you

The Poet

I have been called a spirt of the past, a messenger some say,
set in life’s journey to write along my way.

My words deplicting a moment in time.
the thought set out in simple rhyme.

Breathing life into paper with the use of a word,
reading it aloud, the meaning can be heard.

Though the impact may vary in some way,
the words still hold the meanings they are ment to say.

For I am but a travelor following an unknown need,
I become a poet when you feel what you read.

keep writing!

Thanks Kat!  That's a great poem!  I will definately keep writing, it's part of me.  I am going to start keeping a dream journal too!  A friend told me that I might be surprised how many ideas I could get if I write down my dreams!

that is a great idea Kitty. I have a tablet in the head board of my bed and one in my car. I have actually pulled off the road and into a parking lot before just to jot something down. I have a pretty good memory, but I hate to lose a good thought. Some of my best pieces have come to me on my way home from work or first thing in the morning. I have some that I started over a year ago and haven't "found" the ending to yet? I go back through and re-read them occassionally to see if I can finish them. I think the poetry has been very theraputic in my life. I have found "closure" to some things in my writing.

You mentioned entering a contest.....have you checked out Poetry.com ? They have contests, symposiums, etc. They also let you submit your writing to their web collection. You have the option there to use your real name or a pen name. There are a lot of really good amateur writers there.

Any fav poets? I like Emily Mathews.....she has a way with emotions/words and can touch the heart. She also does greeting cards, I get them for hubby sometimes. She just has a way of expressing deep emotion in what she writes, I love it.

I entered at both Poetry.com and at Famous poets society.  I haven't heard from the second one yet, Poetry.com is the one that is adding my poem to a book!

Favorite poets?  I like some of the classics, Shakespeare and D.H. Lawrence.  I have a quote from Gertrude Stein that seems to sum up my need to write and put my thoughts into writing.

You will write if you will write without thinking of the result
in terms of a result, but think of the writing in terms of discovery,
which is to say that creation must take place between the pen and the paper,
not before in a thought or afterwards in a recasting...

It will come if it is there and if you will let it come."

Gertrude Stein

I just get goose bumps when I read that!

There was another poem that I found the other day, I hadn't read anything from this particular poet before but it was really good!  The poets name is Catherine Faber and the Poem is called The Word of God.

You can check out one of my favorite websites here is the link:

The Catherine Faber poem is in the Women Poets section.  I guess I have too many favorites to pick just one!

I love that quote! It really sums it up quite well.

I also like that C. faber poem...wow, very powerful words. I think I'll have to take some time browsing that site. I love reading poetry written like that, it moves me and makes me feel good again. Sometimes I just get so tired of the way "life" can be sometimes, poems like that one can pick the human spirit back up, brush it off, and send it back along the journey....
