Ok tech geeks I need help. I have a desktop and a laptop. I need to move some music from my laptop to my desktop. Now I know I could burn them on CDs but I dont want to waste all those CDs. So here is what I was thinking I could do, would this work? Hook a router up to my desktop and then plug the laptop into the router. Enable hard drive sharing on the laptop. I know both computers would have to be on the same workgroup, which they are. Would this work? If not, anyone have any other ideas?

Do exactly as you stated. Put both pc in the LAN side of the router. Make sure the router DHCP is on, and you have both pc set to "obtain IP auto", share the drives and you are good.
As for seeing each other. Remember the names of the PC's and once the router crap is done, just do a (start - search - pc on network/computer - ) Type the other pc in. The rest you will figure out. By they way, if you want, you can map the drives so anytime you want to do this, all the work will be done all ready.
Even if I dont have a high speed internet connection to share? If I hook up a wireless router would I be able to access my music on my desktop from anywhere in my house using my laptop?

yes. Just make sure both PC's are in the LAN side of the router. NOT the WAN. The router will auto setup the gateway IP as the router and the files will pass through.
NOTE: There is one model of a D-link router I know of that is brain dead. If it doesn't have a WAN connection, (OR INTERNET) then if doesn't route at all. Total fuck up on their part, but the rest don't give a shit.
yep. Once you do the search for the other computer it's name will pop up. Double click, and it will show you everything shared on that pc. (including the drive you shared). RIGHT mouse click on the drive it shows shared and one option will be, "map network drive". Click that. It will ask for drive letter yada yada. BUT, at the bottom there will be option to connect everytime you boot up. If you intend to use this allot, then check that option. NOW, if you do that and for what ever reason the network is not in place durning one of your boot ups, then there will be a window that pops up bitching about connecting to network drive. Let it be. After a 10 seconds or so, another window will come up stating that the connection failed and do you want to try again next time. If you click yes, life will be good when you network is in order again. If you click no, then you will have to do all the setup's again and map the drives.
