NJ

Taking a mini-road trip in 2 weeks through that wonder of a state: NJ. I get to miss all the exciting north/south gang wars and travel instead through central Jersey. Woohoo! Hometown here I come. Gotta love traveling to somewhere familiar you haven't been in awhile. Plainfield, Warren, Bound Brook, Morrisville, Scotch Plains, and New Brunswick here I come-someone warn the Troopers.

Sup SWAT? I miss the Jersey shore....everyone here looks at me funny when I say 'I'm going down shore'-don't know if that's something I picked up in PA or NJ but apparently it's not a MD saying.

B-Cups...uh-oh: only bad things can come of that lol.

Your neighborhood must be close to where I grew up then (till I was moved out to PA to be a country girl that is). Is it me or is central Jersey the only part of the state that doesn't give their location by what exit they are off the GSP? Or has that changed too?

I'll be heading down there next weekend....as a non-native, I still haven't quite gotten the whole "down the shore" or "down shore" thing.  I just can't bring myself to say it.

Yes, here in Central Jersey there really isn't a turnpike or GSP exit number.  I guess we're special, haha.

I hope there's not a full moon when you'll be passing through here....I hear that does crazy things to people.  Of course, if I notice a sudden warmth in the air, I'll know that you're near.

Greetings from the south Jersey Shore....although I grew up in NY and North Jersey (Sussex and Passaic Counties) I've been here long enuf to become attached to the place.

Anyone going to Atlantic City next week for the PBA convention? later in the month for the FOP?

Hey Slope, did I ever tell you that I was born and raised in Plainfield? And that I was a cop in Bound Brook before moving to Florida? If not, I'm telling you now. It's a great place to be from....

OK - here's the true test to see if you really know anything about the Jersey Shore... What is a "SHOOBIE?"

Is that the same thing as a "benny?"  I've heard both expressions, but no one has ever given me an answer except to say that it refers to people who are from anywhere but south Jersey.

Both Bennies & Shoebies are from "away".  Bennies tend to wear baggy shorts & socks w/ sandals.  Shoobies, altho this trend has pretty much died out owing to giant coolers, would bring their lunch in a shoebox.

Word.  And they wondered why they were made fun of.

They also said things like "down the shore" or "down shore".  At which time they were promptly murdered & buried in the pines.  Inexplicably, they still say it.

Bennie: Central Jersey Shore expression (Sea Side Hgts.) referring to 'Guidos" from North Jersey who sport down the B'Walk in wife-beater, gold chains, slicked back hair, burmuda shorts and black socks in sandals....

Shoobie: More of a South Jersey shore expression (Wildwood) referring to day trippers from the Philly area who once upon a time would come down on the train with their lunch packed in an old shoe box....

"Bennie" is more of a social distinction whereas "Shoobie" just means tourist.

And of course no South Jersey social discussion can neglect the "Pineys" or "Pineballs" of the interior or the "Seabillies" on the barrier islands. Then there are the Philly transplant "K & A" people from Frankford or Kennsington who have moved to Wildwood and the Villas.....

The Villas....not the end of the earth but you can see it from there.

I grew up in the Sea Bright/Long Branch area and "bennies" were those from North Jersey and NY to 'clutter' up the beaches.

I'd never heard the "Shoobie" term.
